Often times new nurses believe that they have to settle for their first job. This could not be further from the truth. The healthcare shortage leaves even new nurses in a prime position to land their dream job right out of school. Now let’s talk about interview tips so you can ace that interview.
Interview Tips for New Nurses
From scheduling that first interview, you are leaving an impression. While working around busy schedules isn’t always easy, try not to be difficult when scheduling. Having a schedule that you can work around shows that you are really interested and ready to get the ball rolling.
Be sure to look up information about the facility before your interview. Being able to work into the conversation how impressed you are with new technology or programs shows you have done your homework.
Think up questions to ask beforehand. Going into an interview prepared to ask questions shows you are just as interested in them as they are in you. There are countless searches for sample questions for nurse job interviews.
Use Your Recruiter
Recruiters can be a valuable tool when prepping for that first interview. They have a relationship with the facility and know what traits they are looking for in a candidate. Ask your HealthCareWings Recruiter to prep you on possible interview questions that you may be asked and to provide any tips on making a great impression during the interview.
You and your recruiter are a team. They want you to get the job just as much as you want it!
Make sure you speak positively about yourself and others. Remember that speaking negatively about others does not make you look good! If you cannot say anything good about yourself or others in a certain situation, don’t bring it up.
At the very least a phone call or email thanking them for their time is warranted. Go a step above and send a handwritten thank you note post interview. It will set you apart from all the other interviews.

Kati Kleber owns the site FreshRN. Her goal is to help new graduate nurses in their transition into successful bedside nurses, by providing practical and concise information as well as encouragement and support. When Kati was a brand new nurse, she felt pretty lost and alone. She convinced herself that everyone else was smarter, more prepared and even looked better doing it. However, once she got to know other new grads, she realized they all felt the same – scared, ill-prepared, and overwhelmed.
